Free The Postcode for Windows Mobile
|
FreeThePostcode for Windows Mobile is an application for any Windows
Mobile 5 (or WM6, WM6.1 or above) phone to make submitting postcodes to
freethepostcode.org really easy.
To use the app simply enter the two halves of the postcode for your current
location, and your email adddress (this is required by freethepostcode.org so
they can confirm that you have not derived the location of the post code from
copyrighted sources). Once the GPS hardware in your phone
is able to provide a suitably accurate location fix (which is largely
dependent on the
number of GPS satellites currently visable to the phone, and their positions
relative to you), click submit and you should get a message telling you whether
your submission was successful or not. You should then receive an email from
freethepostcode.org containing a link that you can click on to confirm your
submission.
When submitting postcodes to
freethepostcode.org you should not use copyrighted sources to find the
location, though this should not be an issue when using the Windows Mobile app
as you will be using your phone's GPS. You also need to take the postcode from
a non-copyright source. The ideal scenario is when visiting a pub or
restaurant, you can take a look at their menu or ask the staff for the postcode
and submit it from that. You should not use an online directory such as Google
Maps or Yell.
This user interface, icon and, in fact, much of the text of this web page,
have been shamelessly lifted from John McKerrell's excellent
iFreeThePostcode
application for the iPhone. The Windows Mobile version is essentially
functionally equivalent to (or, if you prefer, a direct rip-off of) his iPhone
app. I therefore duly acknowledge and thank him for his contribution.

Download the installation CAB file, copy
it to any location on your mobile device or storage card, and use File
Explorer to run it.
This will install a start menu icon called "FreeThePostcode
". The app requires a Windows Mobile 5.0 or later device, and also
requires the .NET Compact Framework v3.5 which is available as a
separate download from Microsoft
that takes up approximately 6.5MB of space on your phone if you don't already
have it installed.
